A long quake of magnitude 8.2 shook southern and central Mexico Thursday night. From the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto reported that this earthquake is the largest that has been recorded in our country in the last hundred years. Many Mexicans could not help remembering that morning of September 19, 1985, when an earthquake of 8.1 caused some 10,000 deaths and transformed the face of the Mexican capital. This time, a seismic alert warned the Mexicans that they had seconds to leave their homes or shelter in safe places.
The president confirmed that so far are reported 32 people killed: 2 children in Tabasco, 7 people in Chiapas and 23 in Oaxaca. Most of the latter lost their lives in Juchitán, on the isthmus of Tehuantepec, announced the Oaxacan governor Alejandro Murat.
A tsunami alert was also issued on the coast of Chiapas and Oaxaca and people living near the beach were asked to leave the area. The Ministry of the Interior issued an Extraordinary Emergency Declaration for the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, so that the resources of the Emergency Assistance Fund (FONDEN) were activated so that local authorities had the resources to meet the food needs of shelter and health of the affected population. In Mexico City, Public Security Secretary Hiram Almeida reported that there is no major damage to road structures or buildings in different parts of the country's capital. In Terminal 2 of the Mexico City Airport a crack in the ground was found, but the airport continues to operate normally. In Oaxaca, a hotel collapsed in the town of Matías Romero.
As a preventive measure, classes were suspended in Mexico City, State of Mexico, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Veracruz and Morelos to verify that campus facilities are not affected. It is reported that there is a fracture in the hydraulic system Cutzalama, which is estimated to be repaired within 48 hours. "It is foreseeable that a replica will register a degree lower than the earthquake, that is to say, of 7.2 degrees in the next hours", warned the president Peña Nieto and called to the population to be alert. He also asked the population to review the conditions of their homes, specifically gas facilities. In finding fractures or damages in their homes, it is recommended that Mexicans report them to Civil Protection and that all indications given by this body be followed.
